The Very Hungry Caterpillar Turns One
A storybook spring birthday that was truly the sweetest.
We hosted the most magical first birthday for our little one, and I am still not over it. A Very Hungry Caterpillar theme felt so perfectly spring — all those saturated greens, reds, and yellows, the food, the whimsy. Everything came together better than I ever imagined, and I’ve been getting so many questions in my DMs that I had to put it all in one place for you.
The setup
The star of the room was absolutely the balloon arch — we did a full caterpillar balloon arch in classic red, green, yellow, and blue, and it made the whole space feel instantly pulled together. It photographed so beautifully against our backdrop.
I get asked about this backdrop constantly! It is actually a thrifted shower curtain — so no link, unfortunately, but it is proof that the best finds really do come from thrifting. Keep your eyes open at your local thrift stores!
The food spread
We served every single food from the book — it was such a fun way to make the theme feel cohesive and intentional. Here’s what was on the table:
The caterpillar cookie cake was the showstopper. Every guest stopped to take a photo — it was adorable and delicious in equal measure.
Party favors
We did “Thanks for munching by!” favor tags (Canva template linked below!) on the sweetest little garden bags. Each bag was filled with:
- Seed packets
- Seedling cups
- Little garden tools
The garden theme tied in so beautifully — a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, spring is all about new growth, and guests actually walked away with something to use at home. I loved how purposeful it felt.
Canva templates
I made all of the printables myself and I’m sharing the editable Canva templates so you can customize them for your own party! Just click to copy and make them your own:

First birthdays are so fleeting — I’m so glad we slowed down and made it special.
